how to say 'to not have' and ' to have' in korean

by 살며시(삶은 여유를 갖는 것이 시작) 2021. 5. 31.

Today's words are '있어요' and '없어요'. It is the most basic and widely used verb in studying Korean. "있어요" means " To have ". "없어요" means "To not have".

있어요-없어요

있어요 vs 없어요

  • To have (있어요|i-sseo-yo)
  • To not have(없어요|eob-seo-yo)

All you have to do is plug in a noun before them. If someone sees whether you have an apple or not, you can answer.  "사과(sagwa) 없어요", " 사과(sagwa) 있어요".

So how do we turn this into a question? Very easily!

You’re going to say the same sentence. you’ll add a slight inflection to your voice, making the ending “요” a bit higher.

In the market

You spilled on the floor while eating. you need tissue right now. Do you want to find toilet paper in the market? you can talk like you learned above.

  • 티슈 있어요?(tisyu i-sseo-yo?)
  • 티슈 없어요?(tisyu eob-seo-yo?)

it's okay to say 'tissue'. Koreans understand because the pronunciation is the same. also two sentence have a same meaning. it doesn't matter what you say which of two thing.
